I bought 5 pounds of retro fabric strips. Am I crazy? A big box of cut up fabric...
It made me smile and I made this:
I decided I wanted to make a pouch.
I now have two new pouches in my shop!
Now what I am going to do with the other 4.5 odd pounds of strips???
not crazy at all! that is a bag of fun and creativity and I bet it makes you happy just to look at it. have shelves full of fabric that do the same thing for me- enjoy

You can make "sting quilts"! You use a base of material like musilin in say a square.... then turning it on point, stitch a strip of fabric (not too wide, but you can vary the sizes) from point to point. You only need to stitch on one side of this base piece, then place another piece over the the base piece. Placing them right side to right side... and stitch at maybe an 1/8 inch seam, fold 2nd piece good side out and then apply the next one.... do this on each side of your base piece and away you go. I use pieces that are really long sometimes and just slop them on... after your piece is filled up and you have tacked down the last edge, turn over the piece and trim off the excess! They become habit forming... and before you know it you have tons of pieces! Oh, and you can use an old sheet or any old fabric that you just totally want to use up... because it won't show in the end! Of course when you are ready, and you have enough blocks, play with the arrangements and sew 1/4 inch seams to make a quilt top! It will be a tad bit heavier because it has that extra layer! I have found string quilts all over the place on different blogs! I have been making my blocks with stips of black/white prints that I had left over from a quilt I made for our youngest Daughters wedding present! Great way to use up scraps and you can use all sorts of sizes. Plus then only take a little bit to get one done! Have fun!

Apparently I have been dropping my "r's"... That should read String Quilts.... and farther on... "strips". Good thing I don't get graded on how fast I spell or type! LoL...

So adorable! It sounds like your fabric strips would be perfect for braiding. I'm eager to see what becomes of them.

I love your little pouch! Beautiful colours! If I had four and a half pounds of fabric strips I think I would make one of those wreaths where you cut the strips into little strips and then tie them onto a wire circle until it is full. Do you know the sort I mean? I keep wanting to do one but can't face cutting all those strips! I'm so enjoying my pears by the way! lots of love, Amanda xxx

Dearest sweet Em, so happy to know that you are going to give the patch-work bias tape a try!! I am looking forward to them! :) Thank you so much on your kind words on my little plush-o-squeeze me! Made me so happy! Love to you!

I say you "pouch" 'till you drop.
Jacqueline's idea is brilliant. One of these days I would like to try unstitching a pair of jeans at the side seams and adding patchwork piping and restitching them all back together. One pocket in "pouch" mode would be just enough to keep it cute. Can you imagine it if the pocket that got "patch-pouched" was on the bib of a pair of jean overalls that had the piping on one leg? Or what if the inside part of cuffs on a long sleeve shirt was done that way? Good thing I don't live down the street from you - I would never get anything done on my housewife to-do list! Carolina

are those strips wide enough for sewing together or are you going to try some cloth weaving???
buying five pounds of vintage cloth strips seems exactly like the kind of hole i would fall into, too.
willingly!!!!

Oh, wow, another great idea! Cloth weaving would be really cool to try. Thanks Jan for your brainstorming!

since i saw this, seems it won´t let me go! ideas of all the things i could make are flowing through my head and a great inspiration! i love your little bag and am eager to see the other things you will be making from the rest of the strips...
i have a very big crochet hook that would be interesting to try with the thinner strips that would just have to be knotted together... for bags or even small throw rugs... or for colorful hot pads on my table or pot holders if they aren´t too thick...
i see the strips available in ebay in the UK and in the USA but none in Germany. may i ask you in what country did you have had luck in finding them?
Posted by: heidi | October 23, 2010 at 07:36 AM
LOL! Yes you are crazy! With all the beautiful fabrics that you have stored in your cupboards and sewing room and you go and by 5 pounds og strips. You make me smile.

no, no, no, you are not crazy! I would have bought them too! In fact I did buy a bag of scraps but they were rubbish, proper rubbish :0(
