When i started blogging, oh, about 210 posts ago I never dreamed my work would make it into a magazine.... in CHINA! The issue featuring Ravenhill plopped into my mailbox a couple of days ago to my great delight. It was so exciting to open it up to see what they had to say the photos and the layout. (Does anyone know Chinese? I would love a translation!)
(NOTE: to get a good clear view of the photos you need to click on it to get it big and then click on it again to enlarge to fill the width of the screen. THEN you'll get good photo quality.)
My little dolls are actually on the table of contents of Little Thing magazine.
I was told by my contact at the magazine: "Little Thing is an independent fashion magazine targeting chinese young creative females and circulate in 5 big chinese cities (Hongkong, beijing, shanghai, guangzhou and shenzhen) with 40000 issues every 2 months. We have 3 important part of contents: illustration, fashion , and creative design."
This is the section of the magazine where I am featured, along with several other artists - at least one or two of whom you will surely recognize as well! I am including the entire article on handmade matryoshkas so you can see the wonderful variety of matryoshkas being made.
Eeek, this is so cool to be in print!
Lilly squealed too when she saw that HER embroidery was pictured here too (pink on pink with the needle sticking out.)
Despite the fact that my etsy shop is listed here I must say that my shop hasn't exactly had a Chinese invasion...
Now look! Rose Hip is here too! I love her dolls and she is making up a fresh batch for her shop!
I wasn't familiar with this artist before, and like the streamlined shape of these.
These are so unique and beautiful.
Pvc-Cat is also on Etsy. I really love the lace around her dolls and that each of them are original illustrations by the maker.
I was interested to page through the entire magazine and note advertisements by well-known brands like Lacoste and DKNY. The other thing that struck me was that most of the models in the mag were not of Eastern origin: ie, they were blond! Finally nearly every page had words or phrases in English, and sometimes French. Obviously very international. What fun this was.
Wow! Congrats!

Hi Emily congratulations. I didn't realise that quite a few people make the matryoshka dolls and was worried they would be copying you in China, but I see that its quite a popular item to make. I must say that yours are distinctive and very pretty and desirable and you definitely have your own style.

This is absolutely wonderful! Congratulations!
And thanks for sharing the whole matryoshka section. It might be that in a couple of years we are trying to get our hands into Chinese magazines just like we are doing now with the Japanese. At the university I studied Chinese for a while, but unfortunately I've never been able to read a magazine with my skills nor to translate one.

what a beautiful magazine to be in! Well done you.
Posted by: janet clare | January 25, 2009 at 08:47 PM
partial and rough translation is that the writer seems to like that you do stuff with your (cutie patootie) daughter and that you yourself have memories of doing stuff with your mother...i think the cuteness of your dolls and the cuteness of your daughter is mentioned several times.
