Thank you so much for all the good wishes for my night alone this past weekend! It was a true delight to enjoy so many uninterrupted hours of tranquility. On Saturday, I just goofed off surfing on the computer and then on Sunday I got busy sewing.
It is funny, I still feel like the new blogger on the block, but I just realized that I am approaching my first year anniversary! So I am going to think up something marvelous to give away to celebrate and thank you for all your wonderful support. I guess blogging just wouldn't be so much fun without getting the lovely feedback from you. It has pushed me much further than I would have gone on my own. The very best part of blogging for me though is feeling a part of this fantastic crafting network of inspiring artists, designers and crafters.
I realized too that I haven't shown you much of my sewing room! I have my own tiny, tiny, almost doll-sized sewing room. Americans, with their typically big houses, would probably say it was the size of a walk-in-closet, but it does have a window so we can count it as a room.
I don't like to show so much of my home because, it is more shabby than chic and well, I make so many messes with my projects that it isn't always is very seldom anything near "perfect". I guess I have wanted you to think good things of me, but perhaps after blogging for nearly a year I am ready to show you more of who I am.
I would love to have my fabrics all nicely folded and arranged perfectly, but I am forever pawing through them to find just the right one, and that makes it a bit untidy... Sometimes my children paw through them too and that really makes things untidy. Anyway I have four sets of shelves with doors nearly ceiling high fairly full of fabric. These shelves aren't too heavily laden but some are near swaying under the weight of it.
I can't even keep my stack of Liberty of London nice and neat, but I still think it is beautiful!
With all the colorful fabrics a sewing room doesn't need much in the way of decorations, but I love the three butterflies on the one wall. I wouldn't have bought them myself because it is rather sad for the poor creatures. Since my husband inherited them we are happy to have their beauty on our walls. I hope you have enjoyed this mini-tour of my sewing space. Getting to see other people's messes and crafting spaces is always a thrill for me as I know I am not the only one less than perfect.
I know what you mean. There are parts of our lives that are untidy sometimes and stages of our life that are more messy than others. But you use your room and you LIVE in your home with your family. Nothing is perfect in a family home. If things are too tidy then real living is not going on. As a mom of 8 I know that I have had many stages of organization and tidiness in my home. I'm at heart a messier person. But I do better in organization so I'm constantly cleaning up from myself. It is nice now that the children are all 13 and older that I can have a room and it stays fairly tidy. I have taken over a bigger room in my house and it gives me the room to be organized. Your creations are lovely and wonderful and I'm always inspired by you. I'm smiling to see your lovely fabrics used and played with. Good for you.

I think your sewing room is perfect! My sewing room is not neat and tidy. I like to have my stash around me for inspiration. Keep on your good work, Emily.

Ooh! Seeing all that fabric makes me want to add to my stash!!

Thanks for sharing your sewing room to us! I know my spaces are far from perfect. I think that's just life. Always putting things away, taking them out... repeating. Things always in motion. I think you're even cooler for showing your space as it is :o) Go Emily!!

How lovely to have a place to srore all your fabrics, even if it is small. Im hoping that we can make out attic into a bedroom for my little boy. That means I can have the 6 foot by 6 foot box rom for all my crafting ! which at the moment is strewn across the whole house!!

Well it certainly looks like a great sewing space to me.
I love the little hooks you have for your scissors. They are gorgeous, and all that yummy fabric.

Oh! My heart don't stop pounding of joy looking at all your lovely fabrics.
Neat and tidy - what's that? Then you would have no time or creativity to sew. It is just lovely.

I'd say, your work room is tidy!! You have to see mine. At the end it's like walking in a labyrinth to find the way out of the room :D

Emily, Thanks for the grand tour of your creative space which I think is absolutely perfect. Big ideas come from small spaces.
I love the fabrics too. What a lot you have to play around with.

Oh my goodness how I would love to come over to your perfect little sewing room and play with all that deliciously lovely fabric. Yes, I would. Thank you for giving me a peek.

What delicious piles of fabric and I think it's great that you've shown them as they really are - they look pretty neat to me anyway. Lovely jars of buttons and other goodies too! Great post.

We Americans can appreciate a good pile of fabric when we see one. And, I see a ton of fabric that I'd love to get my hands on in your studio. I'm hopping the next plane there.

Looks like a most creative space - love those gorgeous set of jars you have - especially the one filled wth buttons! Well done on reaching one year!

Such a nice space! Thanks for sharing. My "sewing area" is still in boxes but all in good time... I'm glad you had some time for yourself. That's important too!

Emily, beautiful room and amazing fabrics! I think I will celebrate your anniversary by adding you to my blog roll. Have a happy one!

I loved having a tour around your sewing room. THanks for sharing.
I think if it were up to me then I would leave the fabric cupboard doors open and just sit and look. There would be no time for anything else!

You sewing room looks perfect to me. Mine is a hopeless mess for most of the year as I can never work on just one project at a time. Then I have Open Studios once a year and I have to tidy it up!
Posted by: Gina | August 21, 2008 at 09:42 AM
Your space is lovely. No one has a truly tidy crafting area..and if they do then they aren't crafting enough! LOL! I'm like you. I only show snatches of my home because it is less than perfect, covered in toys, newspapers and the odd basket of clothes waiting to be ironed and sent back to the starting blocks. It is nice to share with others that we are all the same! Jen

I think your sewing room looks like most sewer/crafter/quilters! I can't keep a neat stack of fabric either. I'd spend all day folding and rearranging and I, like you, am always digging through stacks looking for the perfect fabric for a project. Gorgeous fabrics too!!!
Posted by: Stephanie | August 21, 2008 at 01:16 PM
Those fabric stacks look a bit like mine at the moment ;o) Such fun to see your bits of fabric...I have many of the same prints! Great to see a little glimpse of your workspace. It's interesting to see people's creative spaces...just seeing a person's work room is inspiring, I think--all the colors, all the supplies...another way to connect and share. Thanks for sharing :o)

I think those shelves look really tidy! It is hard to keep a tiny sewing room in order, I know! Those fabrics stacks look so yummy! I think most people would be disappointed to see the state my household is in too...

That looks like a lovely space and I just adore your fabrics! And to me, that is tidy!

What a wonderful stash of fabrics you've got. I find that having lots of things to chose from makes it easier to be creative :-)
Posted by: HildeC | August 21, 2008 at 05:23 PM
Your working space looks nicely organized to me. Mine is sadly a chaos most of the time. Now I see where all those nice fabric combinations of yours have their root, your fabric stash is very inspiring and beautiful!

I LOVE seeing other people's sewing rooms, thanks for sharing. I think you are very generous to let your children rifle through, I'm loathe to let anyone through the door of my sewing room!
Best wishes

I don't have a sewing room at all. I have bins of fabric and I sew at the kitchen table, which has to be cleaned up every night at dinner. I'd love to have even a tiny sewing room.

who doesn't work in a 'tip'? Its nice to have a tidy up now and then though isn't it?
I usually have a huge heap of threads and fabrics right under my sewing machine extension table...not to mention the floor!

It's lovely. Hmm, I live in America, yet all I get is a tray table to sew on...
