Air with a bit of fall chill has come to Norway but it didn't stop Lilly and me from taking an early morning walk to the beach.
It takes me about 30 minutes to roll her stroller down and I was not a bit surprised that we had the beach all to ourselves. My little one took a quick dip in the icy water and then huddled in a blanket.
Meanwhile I have been working hard on a doll quilt swap and July's Take it Further Challenge (OK, I know I am late again!) I thought if I were clever and combined the two into one project then I would finish on time, but with Mom's visit, etc. I just recently finished.
I am happy with how the label for the back turned out. Here it is before I sewed it on. To make it I sewed two pieces of fabric together right sides facing. Then I cut a small hole in the back, turned it right side out. I sewed the fussy-cut fabric flowers on to cover up the hole so it wouldn't show through the light colored fabric. The Pigma Micron pen was recommended to me by the amazing doll making artist, Mimi and the incredibly inspiring quilter, Marisa. I loved how I could write with such precision on the label.
Having finished with lettering and decorating the label, I blind stitched it to the back of the quilt.
The quilt back, hand stitched binding, and the flower cut outs are Chez Moi fabrics by Moda.
The front I made using Heather Bailey's Freshcut fabrics. The Take it Further Challenge for July asked us "What is it to be at the half way mark?" I made long strips of the quilt to represent what is past.
The flower appliqués depict the half way mark.
The future is less clear - represented by the small blocks of fabrics. I do hope the recipient will love it. I think I need to make Lilly some more doll quilts. A girl can never have too many can she? Besides now that it is getting colder we don't want her little dolls to freeze do we?
P.S. I plan on doing a major shop update starting tonight if all goes well.
O.K. now, your hubby better for sure be getting at least a very large baseball bat! That Lilly is such a cutie... Every boy in the place is going to be wanting to be her boy friend! She is such a cutie pie! Watch out Emily! Be forewarned! Your quilt turned out lovely. Oh, and the label... have you taken caligraphy classes b/4? I couldn't write like that if my life depended on it!
Take care... keep warm!

Jean, you always say the nicest things! Thanks for the warning about Lilly and what we are in for. Yipes!
And thanks for the kind words about my attempts at calligraphy. I used a book way back on summer when I was in HS to teach myself a bit...

What a lovely quilt! I must look into getting some of those pens b/c I'll need a label for my next quilt, which is a gift for some good friends.
Your girl is so lucky to have such a talented mommy! I don't think she could ever have too many of your lovely quilts!

Your quilt is absolutely beautiful. The colours and appliques are almost edible! How I envy your partner!!
A shame about the chilly day on the beach. Your little one looked very happy nonetheless.

So beautiful--Lilly and the quilt both!

I never thought to make a label that way! Such a smartie. I think this fall has lots of quilts in my future. After cleaning my sewing room (ok, I am only half done) I ended up refolding fabric into certain project piles. I have two blanket/quilts ideas!

Gorgeous doll quilt - love the appliqued flowers. The label adds a great finishing touch!

Thank you all so much!
Mette, I bought the pen on ebay.
Susan, the micron pen shouldn't fade! It says on it: archival ink, waterproof and fadeproof!
If I bear down too hard though or put too much color in one spot then it does start to bleed. You need a light touch...

Oh Emily that quilt is stunning, as is your label. You are so sweet to credit me with some of the inspiration, thank you so much, my dear. I should just write a script to have my computer auto comment on each and every one of your new blog posts "Your work is amazing and beautiful and incredible" because it is so true. I am now wishing I had joined that doll quilt swap. Your partner is one lucky girl. Very very nice.

I love the colours you have used Emily. Well done for labeling your quilt- where ever I go i keep reminding people to label because what we are all creating are future heirlooms which may be around in 100s of years when we are long gone and people will wonder who, when, why, etc. and no one will be able to tell them unless there is a blog achive service. Ooo la can you imagine that a person going through crafting blogs to try to find a trace of a quilt. Huge task!
Yes I have children who will swim in icy water too- mad but adorable. :-)
Well done with the gorgeous quilt in stunning colours.
