Oh, I can't even begin to describe the joy it is to have my mother here visiting us for three whole weeks. She has to leave now in a few days and that is going to be very sad to say goodbye. I have neglected this blog, my mails, etc so I could enjoy her company to the fullest. I want to thank everyone for such enthusiasm for my most recent post! We have had so much fun reading all the kind words and have really appreciated it.
Would you join us on a photographic tour of the highlights of our shopping expeditions?
These are the gorgeous windows from Husfliden.
Husfliden has the most fantastic selection of yarns in every color imaginable.
I love these little embroidered flowers.
Mom and I can actually spend hours looking through this shop.
Perhaps you can see why after you have finished with this post! We both adore this old-fashioned dress and purse.
Husfliden is one of the few places in Oslo where you can try on and order your very own Norwegian National Costume or Bunad.
You cannot help but notice the details on the budnad. Some have incredible hand embroidered skirts but this one has combined two different trims for a stunning effect.
The trims really are exquisite. When I approach this display I am like a child in a candy shop with wide eyes and eager fingers, wanting to pile it all up and take it with me to the register and request meter upon meter...
The golden and glitzy ones are an interesting contrast to the Norwegian everyday clothing which were rather plain.
Oslo has been providing us with the loveliest of weather for our outings. Sunshine and not a cloud in sight!
Mom insisted that I show you how the parts of my dolls look when I have them laid out on paper.
These are some colors I have been working with lately! Can you guess what these fabrics, a gift from Anne Katrine, are becoming? I am excited to show you soon! Oh, I have a great deal to share... you'll be hearing more soon and more often! We have so much to catch up on!
Meanwhile have a wonderful weekend and lots of love from Norway!

What beautiful dresses and trimmings. I love it when my mom wears her Swedish outfit. Hmm....those look like Christmas colors to me!! Take care!
xox,
Linnea

Hi Emily, missed your regular posts, but glad you have had a lovely time with Mum (Mom), xx

Oh, how I wish we had a "Husfliden" here in London, it looks amazing. Your time with your mum sounds fantastic. I would love to have my mum come over for such a long time - and would definitely spend every waking hour with her as well!

thanks so much for the tour...now i want to come in person!!!

Emily, your wonderful blog brings back so many memories for me. My husband and I visited Oslo in 2000(pre-kids) and fell in love with Norway. It is so great that you and your mother get along well. Thanks for those images!

Oooo that shop is pure eye candy! Those trimmings are wonderful. It's interesting to see the similarities in colour and plaid with Welsh National Costume. I wonder if once the peoples of Northern Europe dressed similarly and then when they spread over a wider area, regional variations started in pre-history?
Lovely post -good to hear that you had a wonderful time with your Mum.

So that's where summer went!
Nothing but rain here.
I love those trims and wouldn't be able to choose between them!

Wow what a lovely shop to waste an afternoon in :)
those trims are so detailed, i wouldn't even be able to pick a favourite one out.
It's amazing to think those funny shaped pieces of fabric make such beautiful dolls

Added that to my 'things to see in Oslo' for the honeymoon next year - thank you, looks wonderful!
Posted by: Katherine | August 03, 2008 at 11:31 AM
The dresses look very familiar to the various types of Finnish national dresses, I'm dreaming of once having one or even making one for myself. The trimmings are amazing. That shop sure is worth a visit or two.

Oh what wonderful window displays, trims and marvellous wonders available in Husfliden. I can so easily understand how hours could be spent in a store like that. Makes me just want to plan a holiday in your part of the world! Thank goodness you so generously share so we can also enjoy it all. Thanks so much.

Looking at all your beautiful photos just made my morning!! I would love to visit there, but then I don't think I would ever leave! You are very lucky to have such a wonderful relationship with your mom. I'm so glad you got to spend the time with her. And I can't wait to see your dolls!! I just look at the ones you've made here at home every day and they make me smile!

Nice! No wonder that the Scandinavian design today is so good, with such a background in folk art. The folk costumes in my country are hard to look at for incerdible amount of different decorations and all possible colors all over them.

The photos are so lovely. I spent a year in Norway when I was 16 and your pictures really take me back. I lived in Tonstad which is two hours from Stavanger. Your blog is beautiful.

What fun! Love the pic's... your last post... you were telling us that the dress you made for Lilly was too plain! Why not put some of those flowers above on it? That would doll it up! She is such a cutie that that's not a problem anyway...
Enjoy every minute with your mom!
Hugs...

Although I've been to Norway a couple of times and of course loved it, especially the midnight sun, I never realized your national costumes had such similarity to our Latvian ones. If I were let loose in that wonderful shop I would most definitely end up with excess luggage.Thank you for the spledid tour.I only wish I still had my mother too. God bless you and yours.

I love seeing your dolls in raw form like that. I hope one day you'll share a whole doll project. That would be a treat.
The ribbon photos are totally delicious. So colorful and I'd love to just grab a handful for myself-lol.
